Popular NFL rookie, Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III, went down during Sunday’s playoff game against the Seattle Seahawks. This week, RG3 had reconstructive surgery to repair his torn ACL and LCL in his right knee. Griffin was recovering from an LCL injury when he suffered a torn ACL, an injury he had previously reconstructed in college.
The diagnose of the ACL tear was not made immediately because an MRI can be difficult to interpret in the presence of previous screws from his prior surgery. In that setting it is often necessary to get more tests, and probably most importantly, an examination of the knee by an experienced physician to determine the extent of the injuries. It is difficult to determine if injury to the ACL could have been prevented, but it is certainly possible that knee weakness as a result of the LCL injury led to the ACL injury.
The good news for Redskins fans is that initial reports suggest that surgery went very well and they can expect their quarterback on the field in a six to eight month time frame.
