Runner's Knee (Chondromalacia Patella)

Runner's knee is a  term is frequently applied to the medical condition known as iliotibial band friction syndrome.  The iliotibial band is a thick tendon which stretches from the hip to the knee.  If the joint is not aligned properly or there is weakness in the hip, the iliotibial band can rub across the outside part of the knee.  This constant rubbing during running causes pain and inflammation on the lateral (outside) of the knee.

Diagnosis

Symptoms include lateral knee pain that is worse with running, especially down hills.  There is frequently pain when going down stairs and there is tenderness over the lateral knee.
