What is Rothman Institute Nutrition & Wellness Counseling?
Welcome to the Rothman Institute Nutrition & Wellness Program, the Delaware Valley’s medically-based, evidence-based, weight management program. We have collected some of the areas top leaders in orthopaedics and nutrition to create a state-of-the-art weight management program.
This program has been developed by physicians and dietitians to help clients lose weight safely and effectively. Clients are taught how to adopt healthy lifestyle habits for long-term weight management.

Accurate Assessment - Rothman Institute Wellness Program utilizes the MedGem® indirect calorimeter to quickly and easily measure the unique metabolism of each client. This FDA-approved device provides an accurate and scientific measurement of the number of calories that a person burns each day.
Small Classes - The Rothman Institute group classes are limited to 30 individuals per class.
Long-term Focus - The focus of the Rothman Institute Wellness Program is on safe and effective long-term weight management.
Results Tracking - The Rothman Institute Wellness Program tracks the results of each client on a weekly basis and reports those results (with permission from the client) on a periodic basis to the client's physician.
Registered Dietitians - All assessments and educations sessions at The Rothman Institute Wellness Program are conducted by Registered Dietitians, who are trained and certified in weight management.
Barbara Bender, RD, LDN, Wellness Dietitian - Barbara is a Registered Dietitian and Licensed Dietitian/Nutritionist. She completed a Coordinated Undergraduate Program for Clinical Nutrition Specialists and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Syracuse University. Barbara has been working in the nutrition field for nearly 25 years. She has specialized in weight management for the past 12 years. Barbara provides group and individual counseling in our Center City Philadelphia and Bensalem, PA locations.
Ciara Beck, RD, Wellness Dietitian - Ciara is Rothman Institute’s newest dietitian. Seeing patients in our Egg Harbor Township and Manahawkin offices and serving the shore community, Beck will focus on disease management and prevention. She will work primarily with Rothman Institute patients on establishing food and exercise plans that promote weight loss and optimize surgical patients’ body mass indexes to produce the best outcomes following surgery.

Nutrition & Wellness Counseling FAQ
How much weight loss is expected?
Expected weight loss will vary from individual to individual. In general, though, our clients can expect to lose ½ to 2 lbs per week depending upon their starting weight, goals, and lifestyle factors.
Do I need to have any lab tests done?
Please bring in any copies of recent lab results. We may request additional lab testing if needed.
Does insurance cover these programs?

Do I need a referral to join a weight loss program?
Whether or not you need a referral is based on your type of health insurance plan.
How much exercise should I get while I am in the program?
Incorporating exercise into your lifestyle is an important component of the Rothman Institute Wellness program. Our goal is for clients to gradually increase their level of activity over time.
Can I still participate if I have other medical problems?
The dietitians at Rothman Institute Wellness work with your physician to determine if it is appropriate for each client to enter our program.
How long is the program?
The length of the Rothman Institute Wellness Program is dependent upon your individual goals.

Health Insurance Coverage
Will my health insurance cover the Rothman Institute's Wellness Program?
Many insurance companies include nutrition counseling in their benefit package. You will want to contact your health insurance provider to find out if your plan covers nutrition counseling with a registered dietitian. If nutrition counseling is covered, ask your provider how many visits you’re allowed and if you need a referral. Other questions you may want to ask include whether or not you need a specific diagnosis to receive coverage and whether or not you have a co-payment due at the time of service.
Our program participates with most insurance providers including Aetna, Amerihealth, Cigna, Keystone, Pennsylvania Blue Shield, Personal Choice, and United Healthcare. Keystone and Personal Choice typically offer 6 visits per calendar year at 100% coverage to all members. Contact us for more information about your specific health insurance plan coverage.
