Non-operative Loose Bodies/Spurs (Knee) Treatments

Nonoperative treatment focuses on restoring motion and function of the knee as well as decreasing pain.  If the loose bodies are stable or bone spurs don’t cause mechanical restriction of motion, then treatment options include physical therapy, exercise, steroid injections, viscosupplementation injections, anti-inflammatory medications, activity modification, and weight loss if indicated.  There is evidence that glucosamine chondroitin and fish oil supplements may help as well.  Treatments are individualized to every patient’s condition with respect to length of time of symptoms, severity, function, and personal goals.
