Fifty years ago, it would have been hard for most people to imagine replacing a human knee or hip with an artificial joint.
Today, about 1 million U.S. residents get a hip or knee replacement each year. Advances in orthopedics also provide artificial joints to replace damaged shoulders, wrists, elbows and ankles.
