Dr. Hammoud on Safer Pain Management

March 23rd, 2017

During this year’s American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons meeting in San Diego, Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Sports Medicine Surgeon, Sommer Hammoud, was invited to participate in a roundtable discussion on The Opioid Epidemic: How did we get here and what are orthopaedic surgeons doing to promote safer pain management?”

Dr. Hammoud discussed the history of opioid abuse, what led to the current situation and alternative pain management strategies.

“The opioid epidemic in this country continues to worsen,” says Hammoud. “As leaders in orthopaedics my colleagues and I at Rothman institute take this situation very seriously and are conducting several studies in an effort to develop alternatives pain therapies. It was truly a privilege to be invited by the Academy to share my views on the subject and to further the discussion and brainstorm solutions with some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the world. I anticipate several alternative therapies being developed and prescribed in the near future and the use of opioids, while still necessary in some cases, to dramatically decline in the coming years.”
