What Can Rothman Orthopaedic Institute Do For Your ACL?

We at Rothman Orthopaedic Institute understand that if you are an athlete, business person or stay at home parent, you have a lifestyle that demands your attention and people that depend on you. We are here to bring you back to your former physical health by offering you two options for torn ACL treatment.

Non-operative Torn ACL Treatment. This option may be best for patients who do not participate in sports. Treatment may include weeks of bracing, icing your knee, elevation of your leg and a possibility of anti-inflammatory medication.

Physical therapy may begin to restore the range of motion and knee strength. A sports brace may be helpful when vigorous activity is desired.

For those who do not participate in sports or any other cutting or pivoting activities, non op treatment can be successful. However, patients should be warned that some people can further damage the knee in cases of instability when nonoperative treatment is not successful.

Reconstruction Surgery For Torn ACL. This option may be best for active or athletic patients. The ACL may be reconstructed using a graft from another patient if we are unable to use the patient’s own body. The doctor will decide which graft option will be most appropriate for the procedure.

When the graft is received, it will thread through the knee joint and secured in the place where the original ligament was before, attaching to both the thigh bone and lower leg bone.

Months after the procedure, the graft ligament will begin to biologically heal and take on the role of the ACL. During this healing process the patient will wear a knee brace and undergo physical therapy.

We communicate to our patients that although torn ACL treatment may be common, especially among athletes, it is not an easy injury. The ACL is an incredibly unique ligament that stabilizes the knee. Because of the limited blood supply, the ACL cannot be healed naturally. Thus, medical intervention is required in order to fix it.
